In the midst of a rousing re-launch, iconic brand American Apparel made a stop in Nashville with an event fusing music and fashion. While in music city, American Apparel (recently acquired by Gildan) presented a list of wonderfully talented musicians including Dori Valentine, Joy Oladokun, Twin Shadow, and rounded things out with a DJ set from band Halfnoise.

Songbird Dori Valentine kicked off the event with an intimate indie-pop set. Her melodic, gentle sound filled Flamingo with an intimate feel despite the crowd. When Joy Oladokun took the stage, she spoke of being sober, and both her story and her voice demanded attention. Her soulful tunes carried throughout the bar, bearing raw lyrics conveyed beautifully with rich sound. Her stripped cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way” was particularly stunning. Twin Shadow rounded out the acoustic performances with a powerful set. Lyrics and vocals alike were captivating. Catch this artist on the rise here in Nashville at Ryman Auditorium on September 21st

Savvage Media favorite, Halfnoise, stormed in for a funky DJ set, providing funky retro tunes and even funkier dance moves. The stylish crowd had no problem finding the groove. Even after DJ Zac Farro temporarily halted the beats, the crowd cheered for the return of the 80’s new wave set. Halfnoise will embark on their UK tour this fall in support of their latest EP, Flowerss.

In a city where music genres blend and blur, where fashion is defined by individual taste, it was truly exhilarating to see everything unfold. One of my favorite things about Nashville is that everyone can proudly present their own personal style, embody self expressionism, and still be celebrated. From leopard print jumpsuits to 70’s inspired bell sleeves, everyone had their own sense of fashion and we are more than certain American Apparel will take Nashville style to great new levels. Be sure to snag some ethically made, staple pieces for your collection!
